Step into the rhythm, joy, and rich cultural history of swing dance in this lively evening of music and movement. Swing dance is a social, expressive style rooted in African American jazz traditions and includes favorites such as Lindy Hop, Charleston, and East Coast Swing. These improvisational dances grew alongside the popular music of the 1920s, 30s, and 40s and still continue to bring people together on dance floors.
The evening features live music by the Silver Swing Band, a dynamic 16-piece Big Band ensemble directed by Steve Grismore. Known for its vibrant 1940s swing sound and expanded repertoire of classic Big Band jazz, Silver Swing delights both longtime fans and newer generations discovering swing for the first time.
Join us early from 5:30-6 pm to learn some basics before the dance begins. Members of the Iowa City Swing Dance group will offer demonstrations and beginner-friendly lessons before the dance begins.
Optional attire: Spring colors or vintage swing-inspired style welcome. No partner or experience is needed—just come ready to move, listen, and revel in a joyful springtime celebration!
